Researchers at IIT BHU are developing new technologies for charging electric vehicles that can cut EV prices in half

Researchers at IIT BHU have developed a new technology for charging electric vehicles with a groundbreaking initiative. Demand for electric vehicles and related innovations are skyrocketing in India, and researchers are responding to various government policies to relax the rules for EV charging stations.

A team of researchers in the Department of Electrical Engineering at the institute has developed a new technology for in-vehicle chargers for vehicles at about half the cost of current in-vehicle charger technology.

Using this technique, you can reduce the cost of two-wheeled and four-wheeled electric vehicles.

Why are electric cars so expensive?

Dr. Rajiv Kumar Singh, associate professor and chief project researcher in the Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering, said:

Electric vehicles (EVs) are the best alternative to traditional IC engines as petroleum product costs rise and pollution levels rise, but due to the lack of high-power off-board charging infrastructure, automakers are onboard. The charger must be built into the vehicle itself.

Electric vehicles are very expensive because vehicle owners can charge the vehicle from an electrical outlet.

How do new technologies work?

The professor reported that the new technology developed at the laboratory could reduce the cost of in-vehicle chargers by about 50%.

This will also significantly reduce the cost of electric vehicles.

This technology is completely unique and has a significant impact on driving electric vehicles on Indian roads.

When do you think new technologies will hit the market?

Lab-scale development is already underway at IIT (BHU), with upgrades and commercialization in progress.

He added that major domestic electric vehicle manufacturers are also interested in this new technology and are ready to develop full-scale commercial products that can be applied to existing electric vehicles.

Experts from IIT Guwahati and IIT Hubaneswar have also worked together to develop this technology. Electric vehicles will be available to the general public.

Government support

Dr. Singh reported that the study was financially supported by the Government of India’s Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY).

This innovative technology of the institute also contributes to the government’s e-mobility mission.

With the help of this new technology, the charging infrastructure of domestic vehicles will be improved and the general public will have easy access to electric vehicles.

Electric vehicles improve community health by eliminating tailpipe emissions, reducing reliance on fossil fuels, and integrating renewable energy into existing power networks to reduce electricity price cuts. Therefore, he explained that it will contribute to sustainable development.

The institute will soon establish an interdisciplinary center on EV technology.

How new electric vehicle charging technology can help people and the environment

Professor Pramod Kumar Jain, director of the institute, said the technology developed would help produce low-cost electric vehicles that would be beneficial to the general public.

The technical, commercial, social, economic and environmental impacts of technology will also be positive. He said the technology would improve the charging infrastructure and support the government’s mission to bring electric vehicles to Indian roads in a big way.

IITBHU develops self-driving car

Professor Jain also reported that a project on the development of self-driving cars and connected cars is already underway in IIT (BHU) Varanasi.

One such project is the Averera project, which has already won the world’s first prize at the Shell Eco Marathon last year.

He also said that IIT (BHU) Varanasi will establish an interdisciplinary center on EV technology to design, manufacture and test battery management systems, commercialize research and provide solutions to R & D problems. He said he plans to develop human resources in this field. ..
