Google temporarily bans advertisements for medical masks, which have proliferated in line with the spread of the COVID-19 coronavirus.
"As a precaution, we have decided to temporarily ban all advertising of medical masks," a Google spokesperson said in an email to CNBC. "We are actively monitoring the situation and will continue to take the necessary measures to protect users."
The restriction only applies to face masks at this time, and does not apply to advertisements for other products that could protect against the epidemic, such as combinations of hazardous materials and disinfectants, which have also proliferated in recent weeks. Google said it "continues to assess" whether the ban should apply to other products, and said it will take "a few days" to remove existing hidden ads, which means users are likely to see them in the coming days.
The latest policy change comes as Google corrects disinformation on its platforms following the rapidly spreading COVID-19 virus, which has killed more than 4,200 people and infected at least 118,000 people worldwide.
Medical experts have tried to warn healthy people who buy masks so as not to create a shortage of equipment for medical workers. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention have stated that There was no evidence to support the wearing of masks.
Last week, CNBC reported that Google was running ads and sponsored store listings for products that explicitly promise to prevent the coronavirus, even though its policy prohibits advertising content that capitalizes on the epidemic. The company said the new ban on face masks is broader and applies to products even if they don't specifically mention the virus. This includes Google's shopping ads, which the company says are "based on a combination of advertiser bidding and relevance, such as your current search terms and activity".
Google is following Facebook, which announced on Friday that it is temporarily banning advertisements and business listings selling medical masks.

Unlike physical insurance agencies, websites don't have a specific schedule and they are available at any time. Drivers that have busy working schedules, can compare quotes from anywhere and at any time, even at midnight. Multiple choices. Almost all insurance providers, no matter if they are well-known brands or just local insurers, have an online presence. Online quotes will allow policyholders the chance to discover multiple insurance companies and check their prices. Drivers are no longer required to get quotes from just a few known insurance companies. Also, local and regional insurers can provide lower insurance rates for the same services. Accurate insurance estimates. Online quotes can only be accurate if the customers provide accurate and real info about their car models and driving history. Lying about past driving incidents can make the price estimates to be lower, but when dealing with an insurance company lying to them is useless. Usually, insurance companies will do research about a potential customer before granting him coverage. Online quotes can be sorted easily.
