Meet Startups: Sensing Smarter Care

Jim Patience, CEO of Anthropos, tells Med-Tech Innovation about a technology platform aimed at changing the face of care in the UK.

First of all, please tell us about Anthropos.

Anthropos is a technology platform aimed at changing the face of care in the UK. This platform connects to unobtrusive smart sensors throughout the house. This sensor provides data that translates into useful intelligence that caregivers and families can use to detect changes in the elderly’s daily lives. This may include insights into how active the elderly are, how they control their food and drink intake, and whether they have problems sleeping at night. In 2022, we will continue to evolve our platform to address other important and preventable health concerns of the elderly.

Connected health has exploded since the pandemic, but how is your approach to it different?

Anthropos’ mission is not just to monitor the daily lives of older people. Our goal is to prevent preventable elderly people’s daily lives, showing that something may go wrong without intervention, such as showing that changes in older people’s behavior patterns are at risk. Ultimately, it’s about preventing significant but subtle changes. Of UTI. By focusing on preemptive care and prevention, we believe we can help older people stay at home safely, healthily and longer independently.

What insights do you have about the platform you have developed?

The Anthropos platform connects to IoT devices and smart sensors located around the house. Because they detect movement, they can be placed in bedrooms (to show movement / awakening at night), refrigerators (to show lack of consumption), bathrooms (to show how often visits to the toilet), and so on. The smart plug can also be connected to a kettle or the like. This indicates whether the elderly drink too little or have the kettle boiled repeatedly.

The sensor monitors 24/7 and connects to the Anthropos platform. This transforms raw data into intelligence, gaining insights into the day-to-day work of older people and flagging major changes and concerns. For example, if older people go to the bathroom more often, this may indicate a UTI and can be serious if left untreated. Caregivers and families can use these insights to take immediate action and fine-tune their loved ones’ care plans to get the support they need.

What are the results of using the platform so far?

This platform has made a big difference in the daily lives of many older people.

One important example of this is a collaboration with an 89-year-old woman named Eileen, a user of the Anthropos system, instead of Home. Eileen lives with Alzheimer’s disease, and the technology in her home has made a big difference in the level of support her family and caregivers can provide to her. Prior to the sensor being installed, Irene was continuously hospitalized with a UTI. However, within 48 hours of installing the system, sensors identified that she was not drinking liquid after Irene left the caregiver early in the morning, and she developed UTI due to dehydration. I was there. Having this information meant that Eileen’s caregivers and her family could adapt her care plan accordingly and prevent further infections from occurring.

Talking about Anthropos, Irene shared a heartwarming message: the sensors are there, but I’m not always aware of them.

Do you have any plans to advance your offer?

We are already connected to over 50 devices and are working to expand our product range to address the more important health concerns of the elderly. He was developing solutions to address three major preventative measures: falls, urinary tract infections, and medication errors. All of this is tied to the mission of Anthropos. Preventing preventable things and keeping older people at home longer and more safely.

Is there anything else you would like to add?

Connected Care Platforms like Anthropos are still in their infancy, but we can expect to develop platforms for monitoring the environment, behavioral patterns, health, safety and security in which people live. The development of this sector as a whole is being led by innovative start-ups that find opportunities to change models of both health and social care.
