Google is piloting a new way to bring local news about the COVID-19 pandemic to the Google News application. The Google News app collaborates with regional news publications in some cities in the United States to provide community resumption timelines, business updates, important information such as school openings, and information about the local healthcare infrastructure. It provides a dedicated section that describes in detail. Public transportation, events, and ways to help families in need.
Readers at Raleigh, Baton Rouge, New Orleans, Lafayette, Columbus, Portland, Cleveland, Myrtle Beach, Albany, Sarasota, Cap Girardeau, Richmond, Memphis, Cincinnati, Boston, New York, Baltimore will take advantage of new features at launch I can do it. Chicago, Detroit, Los Angeles, Minneapolis.
To access the newly added local information, app users click the COVID-19 banner. This will take you to an existing section that focuses on the extent of coronavirus outbreaks. Then scroll down and find the new Local News section just below the Top News section.
This new section will not be displayed if your city or town is not already covered. However, you can force the section to appear by choosing one of the supported cities and making it the one in the Google News app.
To provide this regional information, Google has partnered with 21 news outlets for supported markets, including Raleigh’s The News & Observer, NOLA.com, CBS Chicago, Oregon Live, and Gothamist. The press must have already provided this COVID-19 information in the form of short form content. For example, this page on The News & Observer offers a brief list of updates as bullet points that Google can easily republish in the local news section of the Google News app.
The app will still allow the user to click on the local publication to read more details.
Google is telling us that all publishers need to provide a similar format of news for inclusion for the time being. In other words, Google is not automatically creating short summaries from news articles to fill this section.
The local COVID-19 news feature is currently in pilot testing, but Google plans to expand coverage throughout the US and Canada in the future. We also plan to provide functionality outside the Google News mobile app itself.
To some extent, this addition is one of the ways Google provides its own version of Facebook’s “community help” feature. This feature was expanded by social networks in March due to the COVID-19 crisis. The Facebook hub today offers users a way to get information about how the coronavirus outbreak is affecting their area and what they can do. Google’s capabilities will also come to life when the Flipboard refocuses on the scene with a new focus on local coverage, including coronavirus updates.
And of course, there is the Apple News app, which is a direct competitor of the Google News app. Apple News has also added its own local coverage, with its own City Guides section in its own COVID-19 special coverage area. These city guides focus on providing key knowledge about large US metro tests, resources, jobs and more.
In addition to updates to the Google News app, Google says it has recently expanded its search and Google Assistant access to local news.
Now, when users search for coronavirus information via Google Search, they will see both the top news carousel and the new dedicated local news carousel. Google has also expanded its new carousel, highlighting top tweets from local and health authorities in more than 30 countries.
On the other hand, users can ask their Google Assistant for local coronavirus news by saying, “Google Google, play news about coronavirus in Boston” in a particular market.
Google has also contributed financially to the local news organization itself in the wake of the COVID-19 crisis. Recently, we’ve provided new funding to more than 5,300 regional news organizations around the world, ranging from $5,000 to $30,000. The company said it expects to spend “tens of millions” through the journalism emergency relief fund. In addition, Google recently launched a Support Local News campaign to encourage people and businesses to subscribe, donate and promote local news outlets in the US and Canada.
