According to Bennett, sustainable decision-making can be complicated, especially with so many stakeholders involved throughout the process.

In addition to working with Google’s core sustainability team, Bennett also works with finance, product management, engineering, research, supply chain and investment departments. Outside of Google, she meets her clients, nonprofits, partners, and policy makers.

But first, the commitment to sustainability begins with understanding the problem at hand, Bennett said. For example, Google had to spend time with consumer goods company Unilever to better understand all the steps needed to procure palm oil. Then we can provide solutions on how technology can help make the process more sustainable.

Still, it can be difficult because talking about sustainability can be widespread. So Bennett said her team is trying to narrow it down to the most influential areas.

“This is another sustainability challenge. Too complicated can make it difficult for people to decide what to do first and what to try,” Bennett said.

To narrow down where to start, Google’s sustainability team focuses on a few specific areas. According to Bennett, Google prioritizes productivity, simple decision making, the most influential ones, and the time it takes to project.

“What we have learned over time, as a company or as an individual, is trying to simplify,” Bennett said. “We have created a system that allows people to make decisions quickly.”
