With companies from around the world urge employees to work from home in the middle of coronavirus pandemic, you may be spending more time in your home office than usual. I do it every day, and for me, work meansGoogle Docs. There is one valuable tool that I invite every remote worker to make sure it is turned on, no matter how strong your home Wi-Fi connection is: set up offline mode.

Offline mode in Google Docs is essential even if you have a constant source of Wi-Fi. I can attest to unexpected episodes of unstable internet connection – usefully, my ISP likes to do regular maintenance in the middle of the day. Losing my job is not negotiable, but activating the offline sync mode means that I never have to worry about losing my job. Google Docs will sync automatically when the connection is restored.

Configuration is a breeze, especially if you already use Google Chrome browser. But if you use Safari, Firefoxor any other browser, you're out of luck.

Chrome is easy to install and you won't have to completely switch to Google's browser if you don't want to; just use Chrome as a dedicated space Google Docs app.

Install Chrome and extension offline

If you use another browser, you will need to install Chrome before you can configure offline synchronization. Download the installer and follow the prompts – it will only take a few minutes, depending on your internet connection.

Once Chrome is installed, install the Chrome extension for offline Google Docs.

You'll have access to Google Docs, Sheets, and Slides when offline syncing is enabled.

Configure offline synchronization

After installing Chrome and the offline extension, follow these steps to finish setting up offline sync:

1.Visit Documents, Slides or Leaves in Chrome. Just visit one of the three sites, as your settings will be synchronized between the different services.

2. Click the menu icon in the upper left corner, then click Settings.

3. Click the switch next to Offline.

4. An alert will appear at the bottom of the screen, informing you that offline synchronization is being set up. Once done, another alert will tell you that it has been successfully configured.

Access your files offline

Depending on the storage space you have on your computer, Google automatically downloads some of your most recently used documents for offline access.

If there are files you want to make sure are always available offline, check your document list on the Docs, Sheets, or Slides landing page. Click the three-dot button to the right of the document, followed by Available offline. A check mark will appear next to the document to let you know that the file will be available offline.

You can then edit or work on the files as you normally would, and when you come back online, your changes will be synced with your Google account and it will be as if you were online all the time.
