Scott launches new foil RC, promising aerodynamics, lighter weight and increased rigidity

Scott launched the newly updated Foil RC aero road bike ahead of the Tour de France. As you ride the World Tour costume team DSM at the Grand Boukle, the new racing machine promises an impressive improvement across the Holy Trinity of aerodynamics, weight and stiffness.

The brand has worked with aviation expert Simon Smart to develop a new frameset that saves 16 watts at 40km / h, or over 40km at that speed in 1 minute 18 seconds.

At the same time, Scott achieved a frame weight of 915g with the lightest HMX SL carbon layup. This is 9% lighter than the previous generation foil.

The geometry has also been adjusted to increase responsiveness and agility, largely reflecting the Swiss brand Addict RC lightweight race bike.

Foil RC will be available on four models by the end of the year and pricing will be confirmed later this year.

If Drag2Zero sounds familiar, it’s because the company has a long history of working with Scott on the previous generation of Foil, as well as having a long-standing relationship with ENVE in many other cycling-related teamups. is. Its founder, aerodynamics expert Simon Smart, has had a major impact on air development in recent years.

According to Scott, a three-year co-development process has created the fastest bike the Swiss brand has ever manufactured, achieving 10% higher efficiency in the wind tunnel than previous generation foils.

This was achieved with extensive computational fluid dynamics (CFD) testing across all tube profiles of the new Foil RC. Here, each NACA-inspired tube is individually tested as a complete frameset mockup.

The NACA profile (with a somewhat squared rear side edge) isn’t new to modern exercise bike designs, but Scott says it worked with Drag2Zero to optimize airflow throughout the package. increase.

One of the mistakes bike brands often make is to focus solely on the frameset or the complete bike, says Drag2 ZerosSmart. That could lead to an incredibly fast frameset on paper, but with the rider on board, you’ll find that the aero position is low and the overall system is slowing down.

For Foil RC, Smart monitored multiple iterations of the CFD simulation and found the fastest paper solution with wheels and riders before actually testing it in the Mercedes F1 team’s wind tunnel.

Smart acknowledges that optimizing the bike’s air flow is a real challenge, as the air is constantly changing. As a result, Foil RC has been developed to operate most efficiently at speeds of 32 and 48 km / h in the yaw angle sweet spot zone of 4-10 degrees.

According to Scott, these wind directions and speeds are closest to the wide variety of riding that foil RC riders may encounter.

Visually, Foil RC has some neat details, some of which are in response to UCI regulatory changes that allow correction zones within the frame design. Most of the carbon appears above the bottom bracket, but there is a small fill in the head tube / top tube joint.

According to Scott, the molded struff appears behind the slimmed fork crown and at the joint between the seat stay and the seat tube, and the dropped seat stay is turned 10 degrees inward to direct air outward. , Reduces interaction and turbulence around the inner edge of the wheel.

The fork legs are asymmetrical and have a flat shape on the drive side, while they have a more curved profile on the non-drive side, but the brake calipers are pushed tightly away from the wind.

The Syncros Creston iC SL Aero One Piece handlebar is reserved for the Ultimate and Pro versions of Foil RC.Ashley Quinnlan / Our Media

The One Piece Syncros Crestoni C SL cockpit was developed specifically for Foil RC. This results in a 6 watt savings compared to the previous Foil, which features fully integrated brake hose routing through the head tube, Scott says. There is also a two-piece version of Creston for models further down the range.

An interesting omission is the lack of an embedded bottle cage mount, similar to the one used on the Pinarello Dogma F and BMC Timemachine Road. According to Smart, testing with the bottle installed did not significantly improve performance.

Overall, Scott and Smart claim that the new foil RC saves 16 watts of drag at 40 km / h. This is equivalent to a 1 minute 18 second savings over 40km.

Frame weight 915g, 9% lighter than before

The new Foil RC silhouette balances aero depth with a shallow lightweight profile.Marcus Gerber

Scott says he makes a bold (but repetitive) claim that the new foil RC is not only for aero performance, but also for weight and stiffness.

Use 558 HMX-SL carbon fibers (the finest carbon used by Scott) to create a top-level foil RC frame. It is divided into four chunks, a mainframe triangle and two seatstays / chainstays. Assembly and seatpost sleeve.

Scott states that using finite element analysis, the stress zones of foil RC were tested using simulation to reveal the weight-to-rigidity ratio when the material was applied to or removed from the frame. increase. For example, adding 10g of carbon could provide the benefit of 8 stiffness points equal to a ratio of 1.25.

The lower the ratio, the better. Scott does not reveal the exact ratio targeted by the new Foil RC, but after more than 300 iterations of testing, the unpainted frame weighs only 805g in 56cm size, more than a second generation foil. You can save 110g.

The bottom bracket is stiff for 60N / mm tuning, but the headtube rate is 92N / mm, which Scott says is consistent with the 2022 Bike of the Year finalist Addict RC bike for comparison. increase.

With the frame painted, the Di2 battery holder attached, and the derailleur hanger attached, the Foil RC HMX-SL frame weighs 915g (size 56cm).

Improved comfort and sharp handling

The Foil RC frame has the same geometry as the Addict RC.Marcus Gerber

The new Foil RC has the same geometry as the Addict RC, except for the Syncros Creston handlebar, so it has a 10mm shorter reach.

Scott states that this provided the sharp handling characteristics of a lightweight bike, with component arm syncros designing a flex on the new Duncan SL Aero CFT seatpost for a smoother ride.

The seatpost is designed in three parts: a critical cutout section, a stabilized rear section, and a full-length post with rubberized filler that can be replaced with additional lights (with the system Merida adopted for the Reacto exercise bike). Similarly)).

With this design, the full-length stanchion that supports the weight bends against the top corner of the stabilizing section, providing movement in a narrow angle arc. Scott claims to improve the ergonomics of the saddle’s contact points over traditional wide arcs.

The tessellation seatpost section is coated with a special silicone-based grease that is said to reduce the possibility of squeaking. It needs to be cleaned and renewed every 1,000 km.

Scott also deliberately designated foil RC with 25mm front and 28mm rear tires to balance forward airflow and rear comfort. However, if you want maximum comfort, you can have a width of up to 30mm.

Overall, Scott believes the new frame is 10% more comfortable than the previous model, without considering tire choices.

Availability and pricing of Scott Foil RC

The Scott Foil RC will be available by the end of 2022, with four models available at launch. Due to the current global climate and related implications for supply and cost, Scott did not confirm pricing at the time of writing.

I am receiving a bicycle for immediate testing. Later, details may be available.

In the meantime, check out the first ride review here.
