UK Net Zero Innovation Handbook launched

Initiated today in Sydney by the UK’s Secretary of International Trade, the UK Government, in partnership with PwC and Tech Nation, is publishing the Net Zero Innovation Handbook. This handbook has been produced by the UK Digital Trade Network as part of their 2022 Net Zero Innovation mission.

The Net Zero Mission builds on the Glasgow Climate Accord, linking Australian and New Zealand organizations with clear decarbonisation needs with UK climate technology companies with innovative solutions.

The team engaged over 600 organizations in Australia and New Zealand to understand how UK technology can help solve the net-zero challenges businesses face. They outlined their decarbonization plans and shared the toughest parts of the journey to net zero.

Key challenges in the region include digital carbon accounting, emissions tracking and scope 3 supply chain emissions reporting. The handbook showcases UK solutions to these challenges, and the next phase of the mission will bring together companies from the UK, Australia and New Zealand to facilitate collaboration across these priorities.

The UK is at the forefront of a global boom in investment in green innovation. Investments in tech start-ups are up 210% year-on-year, with more climate tech companies receiving venture funding in the UK than any other country in Europe.

The UK’s Secretary of State for International Trade, Anne-Marie Trevelyan, said:

The UK was the first major economy to make it a legal obligation to achieve net zero emissions by 2050. There are huge opportunities for companies to take the lead and support growth. In fact, between 1990 and 2019, the UK economy grew by 78% of her, but emissions fell by 44%. This is her fastest G7 and shows that green growth is possible.

This net zero handbook aligns UK expertise with the net zero challenges faced by businesses in Australia and New Zealand.

The work follows the UK’s presidency of COP26, the UN climate change summit in Glasgow in November 2021. COP26 brought government and industry together through the UK’s ‘Race to Zero’ campaign. The UK’s green industrial revolution is creating a pathway to green innovation that will mobilize £12bn of government investment, with the potential to triple from the private sector.
