Innovating Edmonton and Rebranding to Edmonton Unlimited

The rebranding follows Innovate Edmonton’s separation from EEDC in 2020.

Innovate Edmonton and its program divisions Startup Edmonton, Scaleup Edmonton and Accelerate Edmonton have been rebranded to Edmonton Unlimited.

The non-profit institution announced its name change on Wednesday, but had originally hinted at the upcoming change on Monday and planned its next step as an inclusive global capital for innovation.Edmonton Unlimited did not share additional details about the potential change other than its name.

Innovate Edmonton was originally established under the Edmonton Economic Development Corporation (EEDC), a non-profit organization owned by the City of Edmonton, which also operated Edmonton Tourism, the Edmonton Convention Centre, and the Edmonton EXPO Centre.

In 2019, the City of Edmonton began exploring the creation of a municipally funded technology innovation entity independent of EEDC. In May 2020, the City Council unanimously decided to do just that, separating Innovate Edmonton from his EEDC and launching a new organization with the same name.

The move, according to the city council, is part of a restructuring of EEDC, shifting the organization’s focus to tourism and conventions.

Katherine Warren has been named the first CEO of Innovate Edmonton, newly formed in December 2020.

Last year, the City Council approved $5 million in funding for what is now Edmonton Unlimited.

Edmonton Unlimited is governed by an independent board with a mission to drive innovation in Edmonton.

Naseem Bashir, an Edmonton business leader and current CEO of the Williams Group of Companies, serves as Chairman of the Board of Innovate Edmonton. Other members of the Edmonton Unlimiteds Board of Directors include Nicole Janssen, Co-Founder and Co-CEO of AltaML, Farzad Alvi, Professor of Innovation Finance at Athabasca University, and Aaryn Flynn, CEO of Inflexion Games.
