How to enable and use Gmail’s smart reply and smart compose tools

Until Gmail’s 15th anniversary last year, Google has added many productivity and machine learning tools to its email service. On the desktop version of Gmail you can press the Tab key to accept the suggestion. When you see the suggested word or phrase in the mobile app, swipe right to add it to your email.

Smart Reply works a little faster than Smart Compose. Instead of suggesting a word or short phrase, Gmail will provide three responses that are suitable for the email you receive. For example, if you receive an email notifying you of an appointment, smart reply may suggest a confirmed, thank you, etc. response.

Tapping these responses will not immediately send an email. You can add more text to the suggested answer before choosing to send.

If you’re talking to multiple people via email, be aware that when you reply with a smart reply, everyone in that email will be CC. It is recommended that you only select smart reply for emails that mean to send to everyone in the thread, as you will have to manually remove the people you don’t want in that response.

Should I actually use it?

If you choose to allow your machine to write email, it may not look personal, but it is not designed to write the entire email. Smart Compose and Smart Reply work best when you use them to add filler statements or to respond quickly to yes or no email. In addition, Gmail is far better at proposing a meaningful response with a 90% chance. (In my experience, responses tend toward positive responses, so if you’re less likely to agree with everything, the response may not work optimally.)
