NVIDIA A100 GPU Private Alpha on Google Compute Engine

Google Cloud has added an NVIDIA A100 Tensor Core GPU to its Accelerator-Optimized VM (A2) instance. Currently, these are only available in private alpha, but will be available publicly later this year.

These instances are very different from the NVIDIA DGX A100. NVIDIA’s products have two 64-core AMD CPUs, but these instances feature up to 96 virtual processors from Intels Cascade Lake. The biggest difference between these two CPU families is that Cascade Lake does not support PCIe 4.0. This should not affect GPU-to-GPU communication over the NVLink fabric, but can be a problem if you spend a lot of time copying buffers to and from system memory ..

Between GPUs, Google describes the peak bandwidth of cloud instances as 9.6 TB/s, and NVIDIA describes the DGX A100 bidirectional as 4.8 TB/s. These speeds are theoretically the same, and I think Google is just counting full-duplex workloads. Google’s instance has slightly more RAM than the DGX A100, 1.3TB compared to NVIDIA’s 1TB.

A2 instances with A100 will be available later this year, but pricing has not been announced.
