Security – Are private Google Drive photos stored somewhere in the root folder?

I started working on a simple personal project where users can upload and view photos. However, the photos are private to each user and cannot be accessed by others.

But then I ran into a problem. First, I put the uploaded images outside the root folder to prevent them from being exposed to other users. But then I had a hard time retrieving them even for myself! Tag.

So I went to check Google Drive and private photos there. Found in devtools The tag and source were actually a URL to Google CDN accessible to anyone with the URL.Pasting the URL in another browser showed the image.However, this URL is a hash coded and probably impossible to guess. But still public.

I was confused because I thought that private image services like that also somehow restricted access to the files themselves, but that doesn’t seem to be the case.

So do they actually store all the photos somewhere above the root folder accessible to anyone with the URL, or is there something else behind the scenes?
