A massive snowstorm has just hit the Sierra Nevada Mountains, closing so many busy highways, streets and minor roads. I wanted to save time on the drive, so I decided to take a shortcut (bad decision). Of course, I soon realized that I was heading in the wrong direction. What’s more, we couldn’t even use Google Maps to find our way back as no one was served.

Eventually, after hours of trying different trails, I managed to reach the cabin, but by simply downloading Google Maps offline (and not taking that “shortcut”), I was able to avoid all problems. Just download the correct map and use Google Maps to navigate to your destination without internet service.

If you’re planning a trip to a location where internet service isn’t available, you’ll need to download the map(s) offline with Google Maps. Here’s what you should know:

First, you don’t need to download the entire Google Map. Instead, you’ll need to download specific regions before you travel. This is the city, county, or region where you spend your time and may not have service available on your cell phone.
