Two Jackets Earn Tickets to NCAA Outdoor Championships – Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets

The Flat Georgia Tech Men’s Track and Field Team had another exciting day with two jackets earning slots to the NCAA Outdoor Championships.

Jameel Gibson started day three of the men’s discus competition. He threw a qualifying mark of 55.14m (180-11) and finished 12th overall. Gibson earned the men’s double berth for the first time since 2009, when Hall of Famer Steve Marcel qualified for the men’s shot put and discus.

In the third heat of the men’s 3,000m steeplechase, he qualified for the U.S. Championships after a fierce battle with Zack Yeager. A quickest split on the last lap allowed Jager to finish fourth in the heat and ninth overall with a time of 8:47.47.

John Watkins also competed in the tech division in the men’s triple jump. Watkins ran 15.35m (50-4.50) to finish 20th overall.

The tech team will continue to compete tomorrow with the women’s high jump at 2:30pm, the women’s 3000m steeplechase at 5:40pm and the women’s 5000m at 8:10pm.
