Meet Startup: 52North Health

52North Health Co-Founder and CEO, Umaima Ahmad, discusses the history of the company, its innovations, and her experience attending last year’s Med-Tech Innovation Expo.

Briefly describe 52North.

52North was founded in 2018 by four interdisciplinary graduate students from Cambridge. Our vision is to improve health outcomes and health equity by reinventing the pathways of care for all people around the world. NeutroCheck is being developed by his 52North and may significantly improve safety and quality of life for cancer patients at risk for sepsis.

The company has received $1.3 million in pre-seed equity funding from investors including Cambridge Enterprise, KHP Ventures and Crista Galli Ventures, and $2.3 million in grant funding from Innovate UK, SBRI Healthcare, NIHR i4i and others.

Last year, Professor Sir Leszek Bolisewitz (Chairman of Cancer Research UK) joined the company’s board and earlier this year the company became Macmillan Cancer Support’s first venture investment.

We have participated in programs such as the Novartis BIOME, the US Med-Tech Innovator, the Innovation Exchange Program at Cedars-Sinai Hospital in Los Angeles, and are excited to be accepted into an upcoming program at Texas Medical Center. was

It was all about making an impact through innovation, and doing it while building an organization that I could be proud to see my kids working for.

You participated in the Startup Zone and PITCH at last year’s Med-Tech Innovation Expo. How was that experience?

good. The event provided a great platform for exchanging ideas, building relationships and growing networks, and we were impressed with the wide range of topics covered in the sessions. Everyone there was passionate about their work and there was a real sense of community and collaboration throughout.

PITCH was a great opportunity to showcase what we’re working on in front of a knowledgeable audience and hear about other exciting things happening at startups.

We would like to thank SBRI Healthcares for inviting us to the Startup Zone. Overall it was a well organized and engaging event. We also hired people we had talked to before but only had the opportunity to meet in person at this event. She has since become a key member of our team.

Please tell us about the history of the company since its establishment in 2018.

It was very exciting and fast paced. Whether it’s company governance, fundraising, hiring, or regulation, we’re constantly learning and growing. Watching our company mature and develop has been a very rewarding experience.

One of the key achievements was growing the team from 1 to 13 people in just 2 years. This has enabled us to establish two of his academic partnerships, one with Imperial College London and one with the University of Cambridge.

We are also very proud of Neutrocheck’s development from idea to sketch to early prototype and finally to a fully developed device and digital platform. We have developed everything in collaboration with patients and medical professionals. As a result, we learned even more and helped refine the product to meet the needs of our users.

We are excited to build a portfolio that positively impacts patient care. We believe our company has a bright future and are committed to continuing our journey of growth and learning.

Tell us about Neutrocheck and where the idea came from.

My co-founder is an oncologist who sees patients undergoing chemotherapy. He recognized how the current neutropenic sepsis pathway impacts the quality of life of people living with cancer. We knew right away that this was the problem we wanted to solve.

What impact might it have on strained medical resources?

The introduction of Neutrocheck could have a major impact on healthcare systems around the world. In the UK, this prevents around 50,000 unnecessary A&E visits annually, allowing clinicians to focus on treating at-risk patients. Early identification of at-risk patients also provides an opportunity for early antibiotic treatment, saving hundreds of lives each year across the UK.

What else is planned for 52 North Health?

We are expanding our digital product offering and are excited to be working with new Trusts across the UK. All I can say is that I’m always thinking of exciting things, probably not much.
