Google ends support for first-generation Chromecast

Google seems to have quietly dropped support for the original Chromecast, and now that information is out.

Apparently, Google quietly ended support for the original Chromecast last month, ending a decade of updates. His first Chromecast debuted in his 2013, and since then many more Chromecasts have been announced and released. As for the last update the device received, Chromecast was updated in November 2022 with software version 1.36.159268, which only brought “bug fixes and improvements.” If you still have the original Chromecast, you can continue to do so, but Google warns that you may run into problems down the road.

This information was discovered by 9to5Google on Google’s Chromecast help support page, which states that support for the 1st generation Chromecast has ended. Apparently, this was updated at some point last month and only now is it clear. What this means is that users of his Chromecast 1st generation will no longer receive updates. Additionally, Google does not provide any technical support for this product. Devices will continue to work, but Google warns that “users may notice slower performance.”
