Google Releases Android TV 14 Beta, Retires Android 13

With the release of Android 14 Beta 3 for Pixel devices, Google began previewing what to expect from Android 14 on TVs, deprecating Android 13 in the process.

So far, Google has been relatively quiet about the main features that Android 14 brings, with little mention of the upcoming release at Google I/O last month. The trend seems to continue, as this latest beta for Android TV and Google TV devices launched without any publicity or public documentation.

Generally, there are two main ways to try Android TV 14 Beta. You can currently download and run a preview emulator through Android Studio, but Google usually also provides builds that you can install on one of their (now discontinued) ADT-3 boxes. However, that build is not yet published on the Android Developers website. Unfortunately, Android TV 14 Preview cannot be installed on Chromecast.

Just a few days ago, Google released an update to the 4K model of the Chromecast with Google TV, but the dongle remains in Android 12 for now. In fact, the company seems to have abandoned plans for his Android 13-based update entirely. Not just Chromecast, but all Android TV and Google TV devices as well.

According to new code changes, Google will completely deprecate Android 13 for TVs. This is reflected in Android Studio by hiding that version of the emulator in the deprecated menu.

Deprecate T as Android TV version. Moving the T image to the deprecated menu discourages developers from creating T images when they don’t need to.

Considering how quickly Google was able to release the beta preview of Android TV 14, it makes sense to skip to the new version instead of following the yearly pace. Wear OS will follow a similar biennial pattern, with Wear OS 4 moving from Android 11 to Android 13 this fall.
