“They’re preventing the entire business or application category from getting caught in the ecosystem by excluding competitors from each aspect of the business they’re protecting,” Sweeney said.

In addition to Fortnite, Epic creates Unreal Engine, software that makes it easier to create 3D-based video games. Sony is worth $18 billion after investing $250 million earlier this month. Tencent is also a major shareholder.

Sweeney said in June that the company plans to continue deploying the Epic Games Store on Android. In a CNBC interview on Friday, he pointed out that Google also has rules that complicate its launch.

“Google basically deliberately constrains competing stores by providing user interface barriers and obstacles,” Sweeney said.

Earlier, Epic Games published Fortnite as a “sideload” installation, which didn’t have to be downloaded from the Google Play app store, so the company could avoid Google’s 30% reduction. However, the installation process was not straightforward and negatively impacted adoption. Google finally accused the Fortnite installer of a security flaw. Fortnite was released on Google Play earlier this year.

But in the end, one of Sweeney’s biggest complaints revolves around a 30% fee that both Apple and Google pay for in-app purchases. On iPhone, users are required to pay for digital goods through Apple’s App Store payment system. Apps that bypass this mechanism may be removed from the App Store. Google requires developers to also use Google Play billing. Other apps that make a lot of money through apps, like Tinder publisher Match Group, have publicly criticized the 30% commission.

Earlier this week, Apple released a paid survey that suggested that its iPhone App Store would be virtually unchanged with respect to practices and fees from competitors, including Google.
