New AirPods could use bone conduction, or Apple could wait for AR Glasses

The following AirPods can use bone conduction to enhance voice transmission. The latest plans for this AirPods upgrade will be displayed in the form of a patent application from Apple. In the plan, Apple shows a combination of elements. Such an element requires a little more than a pair of earphones, but not the entire helmet headset.

In the figures and drawings Apple has shown via the USPTO, Apple’s patented device has earphones, straps that extend from behind the ears to behind the head, and a series of technology bits embedded in the straps. The strap contained a microcontroller, a user control (on the temple side) and a bone conduction transducer.

Earphone elements can’t be used for different purposes than traditional earphone sets. Earphones are not audio sources, but air-conducting transducers. When used in combination with a bone conduction transducer, audio is sent to the user’s head through both the ear canal and the user’s skull.

Part of the benefit of this system is that it does not block the ear canal from the ear canal. This differs from the vast majority of personal audio devices, which focus on all blocks of audio that are outside the audio delivered by the audio device.

Apple might have intended this technology for some AirPods, but it seems to suggest that the nature of the technology requires two entry points for audio. It would make more sense to eventually include this technology in Apple’s Augmented Reality headsets, or Apple Glasses, if Apple’s method matches the method presented here.
