Google plans to start producing Pixel smartphones in India by the next quarter, according to a Nikkei Asia report on Thursday.

US tech giants are looking to tap into India's booming smartphone market while seeking to diversify their supply chains away from China amid the US-China tensions, the report added.

The move will support Google's ambitious goal of shipping more than 10 million Pixel smartphones this year, the report said, citing people with direct knowledge of the matter.

The report also states that Google will begin manufacturing Pixel 8 Pro smartphones in the April-June period, followed by Pixel 8 production around mid-2024.

Google will compete in India with smartphone giants Apple and Samsung, as well as Chinese brands Vivo and Xiaomi.

Counterpoint Research said in a report on Wednesday that India will become the fifth smartphone market with annual iPhone sales exceeding 10 million units in 2023, making it a key market for Apple.

Research firm Canalys said last month, “The Indian smartphone market in 2023 remained stable with overall shipments at 148.6 million units, but there was a slight decline of 2%.''

“Samsung maintained its pole position in the fourth quarter of 2023 with a market share of 20% and shipments of 7.6 million units. Xiaomi continued its strong performance and took second place with shipments of 7.2 million units. “We secured the third place with 7 million units sold.” To Canaris.
