Secretary of Commerce Hastoday Announces National Artificial Intelligence Safety Lab Strategic Vision for Safe and Responsible AI Innovation

As the AI Seoul Summit kicks off on May 21, 2024, U.S. Secretary of Commerce Gina Raimondo unveiled a strategic vision from the National Artificial Intelligence Safety Institute (AISI), outlining plans to advance AI safety and responsible AI innovation at a time of incredible advances in artificial intelligence, as AI becomes more powerful, more capable, and more widely adopted.

Launched in 2023 by the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) under the Department of Commerce, AISI aims to bring together the best and brightest minds from academia, industry, and government to better understand advanced AI, mitigate its risks, and help us all harness its benefits.

This strategy is based on two fundamental principles: first, beneficial AI depends on AI safety, and second, AI safety depends on science. With this in mind, AISI will address several key challenges:

Lack of standardized definitions and metrics for AI safety; Underdeveloped testing, evaluation, verification, and validation methodologies and best practices; Lack of established risk mitigation measures across the AI design and deployment lifecycle; Limited national and international coordination on AI safety issues.

To achieve its goals, AISI will focus on three main objectives:

Advance the science of AI safety through the development of evidence-based testing, benchmarks, and evaluations of AI models, systems, and agents, and find practical solutions to near- and long-term AI safety challenges. Clarify, demonstrate, and disseminate AI safety practices by building and publishing specific metrics, evaluation tools, methodological guidelines, protocols, and benchmarks for assessing the risks of advanced AI. Support agency, community, and AI safety alignment by facilitating the adoption of guidelines, evaluations, and recommended safety and risk mitigation measures through an integrated ecosystem of diverse disciplines, perspectives, and experiences.

In tandem with her strategic vision, Secretary Raimondo announced plans to launch a global scientific network on AI safety through meaningful collaboration with the AI Safety Institute and other government-supported scientific organizations focused on AI safety and committed to international collaboration. This expands on previously announced collaborations with laboratories in Japan, Canada, Singapore, and the United Kingdom.

AISI will bring together international AI safety institutes and other stakeholders in the San Francisco area later this year.

Recent advances in AI have exciting and life-changing potential for our society, but only if we work hard to mitigate the very real dangers that exist if AI is not developed and deployed responsibly. U.S. Secretary of Commerce Gina Raimondo added, “Because safety drives innovation, it is paramount that we get this right, and work with our partners around the world to ensure that the rules around AI are written by society that respect human rights, safety, and trust.”

View photos The advantages of comparing online car insurance quotes are the following: Online quotes can be obtained from anywhere and at any time. Unlike physical insurance agencies, websites don't have a specific schedule and they are available at any time. Drivers that have busy working schedules, can compare quotes from anywhere and at any time, even at midnight. Multiple choices. Almost all insurance providers, no matter if they are well-known brands or just local insurers, have an online presence. Online quotes will allow policyholders the chance to discover multiple insurance companies and check their prices. Drivers are no longer required to get quotes from just a few known insurance companies. Also, local and regional insurers can provide lower insurance rates for the same services. Accurate insurance estimates. Online quotes can only be accurate if the customers provide accurate and real info about their car models and driving history. Lying about past driving incidents can make the price estimates to be lower, but when dealing with an insurance company lying to them is useless. Usually, insurance companies will do research about a potential customer before granting him coverage. Online quotes can be sorted easily. Although drivers are recommended to not choose a policy just based on its price, drivers can easily sort quotes by insurance price.
