Google joins chat about high-speed internet in Southern Nevada

Google Fiber could be available to residents and businesses in Southern Nevada as early as next year, according to Ashley Church, the internet provider's western regional general manager.

Church said that with recent approvals from Clark County and Las Vegas, GFiber is ready to begin building its fiber-optic network in the Las Vegas area. The network will be built over several years, with service rolled out in stages as it becomes available in tandem with construction.

“I think it's an exciting time to start investing in the city of Las Vegas and provide choice and competition for the space to really build infrastructure for the residents and businesses of the city,” Church told The Sun.

The Clark County Commission approved a franchise agreement with GFiber in February, according to a news release from the provider. The Las Vegas City Council unanimously approved a similar agreement at a meeting earlier this week.

“This is an important day for the city because having a company like Google wanting to invest so much in our city goes a long way to helping us become one of the most connected cities in the country,” Las Vegas Mayor Mike Janssen told City Council members at a meeting Wednesday.

Church said GFiber has gotten to this point thanks to a great partnership with Las Vegas, which has enabled the provider to bring new competition to the Nevada market and provide local residents and businesses with access to fast, reliable and fair-priced internet.

The company will join existing internet providers in Southern Nevada, including CenturyLink and Cox.

More choice is a good thing for consumers, leading to better prices, speeds and customer service, Church noted, and GFiber is focused on providing customers the fastest internet at competitive and transparent prices, including equipment delivery and installation.

“We take customer service seriously. Customer centricity is part of our product, it's not an afterthought. We focus on giving people what they value and we strive to ensure we give them what they expect from an internet provider,” she says.

Church said GFiber's network and services will support residents' growth as the demand for fast, reliable internet continues to grow due to telehealth, artificial intelligence and remote work.

“We've experienced during the pandemic when some communities had to work from home or couldn't attend school and didn't have the internet service they needed to work remotely. An agreement like this will go a long way in helping us become a more connected city,” Jansen said Wednesday.

GFiber offers internet for just $70 a month, according to the company's website, and is currently in the design phase of the process to build out its Las Vegas network, Church said.

“We are thrilled that Google Fiber is making this significant commitment and investment in our community and city to expand their high-speed broadband internet service and make it available throughout our city. Their planned investment will also help diversify our economy, potentially attracting remote workers from around the country who need high-speed internet service to live and work in our city,” Gina Bishop, franchise director for the Las Vegas Office of Strategic Services, said at Wednesday's City Council meeting.
