Faculty awarded FAA grant to provide high-tech hands-on learning program for aviation educators

A team of faculty from the School of Aviation – Julius Keller, Damon Lercel and Manoj Patankar – received a two-year grant from the Federal Aviation Administration.

The grant funding, totaling $383,824, will help develop a teacher training model with Greater Lafayette Career Academy and Purdue Polytechnic High School. “We are in the process of selecting teachers right now,” Keller said.

This project will develop an innovative experiential learning pathway program for the next generation of pilots that meets the knowledge requirements for manned and unmanned aerial vehicle (UAS) pilots. The program is designed to engage teachers, parents, and students in working towards individual pathways towards a career in aviation. The high school curriculum is portable, accessible, and low-cost.

Additionally, the program will strategically leverage innovative automated flight training and simulation technologies incorporating artificial intelligence and employ a train-the-trainer model to enable students to efficiently and effectively engage in experiential learning activities.
