Google to eliminate Chinese influence operations

Google's threat analysis group has removed thousands of accounts on its platform for spreading misinformation in Southeast Asia and Europe.

Google released its quarterly TAG Bulletin outlining a number of influence operations campaigns that its threat analysis group has disrupted over the past three months.

The biggest culprit appears to be China, where TAG shut down 1,320 YouTube channels and 1,177 blogs on the Blogger platform. The accounts were part of an organized network of fake accounts that produced content in both English and Chinese and were focused on influencing China-US diplomatic issues.

According to Google, the network and its campaigns had direct ties to the People's Republic of China.

The next biggest offender is Russia: TAG removed 378 YouTube channels linked to Russian consulting firms, whose content was in Russian and aimed to support Russia and criticize Ukraine and its Western allies.

TAG also shut down 59 YouTube channels, all in Urdu, that were part of a Pakistan-linked influence campaign targeting Pakistani politicians.

37 Blogger accounts were found to be linked to influence operations in Indonesia. The blogs were written in Indonesian and promoted the country's ruling party. Advertising and AdSense accounts with similar links and content were also shut down.

Several smaller coordinated campaigns have been carried out in India, the Philippines, Myanmar and France.
