Destination Earth launched: Announced today during a ceremony at the EuroHPC LUMI Supercomputer Center in Kajaani, Finland, Destination Earth will provide unprecedented insights into the complexity of our planet and advance modeling of climate change adaptation and environmental resilience.

Destination Earth is a flagship initiative of the European Commission to develop a high-precision digital twin, or replica, of the Earth system, aiming to revolutionise our understanding of natural phenomena, hazards and the impacts of human activities linked to climate and environmental change.

Destination Earth leverages cutting-edge digital twin technology, data analytics, AI, and recent investments and advances in high-performance computing to provide unprecedented levels of accuracy, resolution and interactivity, enabling users to explore how the Earth system will evolve under a range of scenarios decades into the future.

This will enable policy makers, researchers and other stakeholders to make informed decisions in designing precise climate change adaptation strategies and effective mitigation measures.

It will also form the basis for an effective European adaptation strategy to support the green transition, contributing to the EU reaching its goal of becoming carbon neutral by 2050 and implementing the Green Deal and Digital Strategy.

Destination Earth is led by the European Commission and implemented by ESA in collaboration with the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF) and the European Exploitation of Meteorological Satellites (Eumetsat). More than 100 public and private partners are involved in building the system.

ESA is developing and operating the DestinE Platform, an open and secure cloud environment that supports the exploitation of DestinE data, with the aim of meeting the needs of a large and diverse community including citizens, scientists, academics, commercial organisations and policy makers.

Starting today, select users with access to the DestinE platform can explore and process data generated by the first two digital twin simulations. The DestinE platform will continue to evolve to offer more services, tools, and applications to meet the growing needs of its users.
