After ChatGPT, Apple teases surprise plans to add Google Gemini support to Siri 2.0

In a surprising twist to the usual Apple vs. Android rivalry, it has been announced that Siri may be able to ask Google Gemini for help.

At WWDC 2024, Apple unveiled a new approach to artificial intelligence (or “Apple Intelligence,” as the company aims to call AI going forward), bringing a number of enhancements to Siri, including the ability to generate custom emoji, summarize long emails, and support for photo editing.

It's a pretty standard feature, but one other interesting thing is that if Siri thinks another chatbot can better handle your query, it can pass it on to that chatbot.

Currently, ChatGPT is the only AI Siri relies on, but it was revealed during the keynote that other AI will be added in the future, and after the showcase, Apple's Craig Federighi named Gemini as one of the AIs Apple would like to integrate, adding, “We don't have anything to announce right now, but that's our general direction.”

Gemini certainly makes sense and is a serious alternative to ChatGPT, but considering Gemini is meant to be a staple on Android devices, I'm a bit surprised to see it being shared with iPhones. I'm not complaining though.

Gemini and ChatGPT have been locked in a fierce battle over the past few months, but this latest addition isn't so much an improvement to an AI-enhanced Siri as it is about giving you the freedom to choose which third-party services you trust.

Apple’s Privacy First Belief

Siri will always ask for permission before consulting other AIs and will only share data relevant to your query. If you don't want your data to be shared with OpenAI or Google, you can turn off the feature or deny Siri's requests to use AI.

Apple's approach to privacy, particularly transparency about how it handles user data, seems to be the feature of its AI services that the company is most keen to highlight: The company boasts of its private servers and says that third-party organizations can verify its claims, a feature not currently seen from other companies in the AI space.

Given past history, it's fair to assume Apple will toe the line on this one, but we won't know exactly how it will work until we see the new Siri in action, which isn't currently included in the iOS 18 beta, but hopefully we'll get a chance to try it out soon.
