A new AI plagiarism detection tool hits the edtech world

Coursera is the latest company to release a tool to detect the use of AI in students' work.

In the coming months, Coursera plans to offer a suite of generative AI tools, including the ability to enter the online course provider into the controversial world of detecting whether students have used artificial intelligence in their learning.

Coursera president and CEO Jeff Majoncalda told Inside Higher Ed that the new expansion will focus on academic integrity and grading features.

“AI is becoming capable enough to do what we've always done with the highest level of quality, but it needs to be scalable,” he said. This is a new way of doing things, but not a new approach.

The company announced Tuesday that the new tools will build on its Coursera for Campus suite of services, which launched in late 2019.

Coursera did not provide a timeline for the rollout over the next few months, but said it is running several pilot projects with its new AI tools around the world, including at Van Lang University and FPT University in Vietnam, and Alliance University and Woxen University in India.

The announcement comes on the heels of several contentious debates in academic circles last year about the efficacy and ethics of using AI tools to detect plagiarism.

Turnitin, one of the best-known companies in the field, released an AI detection tool in April 2023. Some institutions are using the program, while others have condemned it. Several universities, including Vanderbilt University, have announced that they will discontinue Turnitin's detection tool.

Coursera said its new tool doesn't use AI to track people.

The tool's AI bot will ask students five questions about the choices they made while completing the assignment, and depending on their answers, the bot may ask five more questions before sending the answers to the instructor.

Majoncalda said the tool tracks the thought process behind assignments and essays.

It won't say whether you cheated or not, but it will help professors understand whether you may have cheated, he said.

Temple University Vice President Stephanie Fiore said the approach is a step in the right direction, rather than placing blanket blame on students, but that such situations are better handled between students and faculty.

“This is proceeding under the premise that we need to catch students cheating and give them a technological solution,” said Fiore, who is also senior director of Temple University's Center for Teaching Advancement.

AI Trends in Online Courses

Phil Hill, a market analyst and education technology consultant at Phil Hill & Associates, said Coursera's announcement leaves more questions than answers and that the whole rollout is ill-thought-out.

“I think they've been very strategic thus far. They have OPM operations, they have consumer facing, they have business facing, and they're all organized around the same theme of synchronous online courses,” Hill said. They've made a lot of smart moves in the past, but this feels different to me because it's not clear what they're trying to do or why they're trying to do it.

Coursera isn’t the first online program manager (better known as OPM) to deploy generative AI.

EdX, which was also acquired by OPM 2U, began offering AI solutions in 2023 with edX Xpert, a learning assistant on the edX platform. EdX also offered an edX plugin for ChatGPT.

Khan Academy has a long history with AI and works closely with ChatGPT's parent company, OpenAI, and Khan Academy founder Sal Khan has acted as a poster child for ChatGPT's latest version, GPT-4o, showing off the technology's one-on-one mentoring capabilities.

Also emerging in the OPM space, LinkedIn Learning released a chatbot in October 2023 that answers learner questions in real time.

Hill said he sees Coursera's latest announcement as riding a wave of AI usage.

The race to build AI into products is already on, and Coursera is planting the flag, Hill said. That may be their strategy. A lot of companies say, “We're working on AI,” but sometimes they get too ahead of themselves.
