Microsoft and Google offered to provide training and software discounts to help rural hospitals across the country secure their data systems this week, but a big question remains: Will their collaboration really stop the rise of ransomware attacks?

Information security experts and researchers interviewed by STAT said they are encouraged by the prospect of increased cybersecurity investments, but that the effort falls far short of what's needed to keep Americans' health data safe and prevent the outages that frequently cripple healthcare systems. Some noted that the effort focuses on loosely related upgrades and promotes the interests of big tech companies over cybersecurity companies that are specifically focused on healthcare vulnerabilities.
