Google's ongoing abuse of the Fitbit brand continues with the shutdown of the web dashboard. Fitbit.com was once both a storefront and a way for users to explore reams of fitness data in a big-screen UI. The store closed in April, and the web dashboard will be shut down in July.

In a post on the “Fitbit Community” forum, the company said, “Next month, we will integrate the Fitbit.com dashboard into the Fitbit app. After July 8, 2024, you will no longer be able to access the Fitbit.com dashboard in a web browser.” And that's it. Google is not interested in replacements or new fitness features, just the removal of web features. Remember, Google used to be a web company. Now it's phone apps or nothing. Google did the same with its Google Fit product in 2019, dropping the more powerful website to focus on apps.

Dropping the web app leaves some holes in the Fitbit ecosystem. The Fitbit app does not support larger screens such as tablet devices, so it removes the only large interface for data. All of Fitbit's competitors have large screen interfaces. Garmin has a very similar website, and the Apple Watch has an iPad Health app. This is not an improvement. To make matters worse, the app does not feature a web dashboard, and there have been many fierce comments on Reddit forums pointing out the app's flaws in terms of graphs, achievement stats, calorie calculations, and logging.

Google acquired Fitbit in 2021 and has spent most of that time shutting down Fitbit's features and degrading the quality of its products. The migration to Google accounts began in 2022. Google Assistant was removed from Fitbit's 2022 product line, the Sense 2 and Versa 4, although it was supported on previous models. Social features, a key part of fitness motivation for many, were dropped in 2023. Google has primarily focused on making Fitbit an app for the Pixel Watch.
