Google agrees to buy clean power from Buffett's Nevada utility

(Bloomberg) — Alphabet Inc.’s Google is partnering with a Nevada power company and a geothermal energy startup to run its data centers on geothermal energy.

The startup, Ferbo Energy, will develop a geothermal plant that will provide 115 megawatts of electricity to NV Energy, a subsidiary of Warren Buffett's Berkshire Hathaway Energy, according to a Google statement. NV Energy will then sell the power to Google under a deal that must be approved by state regulators.

Unlike solar or wind power, geothermal plants can run 24 hours a day, using water heated by underground rocks to generate electricity without emitting carbon dioxide. Ferbo is drilling horizontally within the geothermal reservoir to boost its power output.

Data centers' growing power consumption is a problem for technology companies that are aiming to reduce global-warming carbon emissions. The electricity Google agreed to buy from NV Energy and Ferbo is enough to power about 86,000 homes.
