Support for International Students, Sanitary Products Map Wins College FAIR Technology Innovation Competition

Frustration and embarrassment led fourth-year biomedical engineering (BME) students Sona Desai, Summer How, Mirna Jaber and Jennah Walcott to think about how they could help women find menstrual products on campus.

Jaber said the anxiety caused by not having menstrual products is a universal experience for women, and it also increases the likelihood of bleeding through your pants. After noticing consistent shortages of menstrual products in campus restrooms, we interviewed students to learn how they perceive restroom stock and how shortages affect them, especially during their period.

These 60 conversations confirmed a need: Most students said they had used products on campus or asked friends about them at least a few times a year.

The team decided to create MenstraMap, a web app that displays a map of menstrual products available in restrooms and details stock levels. Small force sensors detect high, medium, or low stocks of pads or tampons in real time. App users can update the data and even report menstrual products and pain relievers in vending machines.

Jaber said a prototype sensor at Price Gilbert Library is providing information to the test site, and they are working to have the app available this summer.

The team is also participating in the CREATE-X Startup Launch program to refine their prototype and improve their business model, with the goal of expanding to universities across the country in the future.

“With FAIR Tech funding, we were able to develop a working prototype and improve our circuit-building and computer science skills. The program gave us the tools to implement the prototype on campus and increase awareness and access to menstrual products,” Jaber says.
