Boston pub faces backlash after flying pride flag in solidarity with LGBTQ bars
BOSTON — A Boston pub that flew a rainbow flag during the city's Pride celebrations is now receiving negative reviews online.

AT O'Keeffe's posted a video on social media of staff flying rainbow pride flags in honour of the LGBTQ+ community during the city's Pride festival. The pub also hosted a Pride event for the soon-to-open lesbian-run establishment next door, Dani's Queer Bar.
“The idea was to get into the spirit of the weekend and have a great party,” O'Keefe's manager Rich Gaines said.
The video left some people outraged that the American flag had been replaced with a Pride flag, and O'Keefe was subsequently hit with a wave of negative one-star reviews, to which Danis responded by saying that O'Keefe had “kindly” hosted the event for them and encouraged guests to leave positive reviews.
“We don't want these haters to ruin the business we love, so if you had a good time at AT O'Keeffe's please leave a positive review,” Danis said in a social media post. “Let's show the homophobes that this kind of thing won't be tolerated in Boston and that love and support will prevail!”
“There are many LGBT people who have served our country,” said Charina Pimentel, assistant general manager at Danni's. “It was never meant to be disrespectful. It was a message of welcome.”
Pimentel said O'Keefe agreed to hold the event after delays in inspections and permits delayed Dani's opening.
“We fought so hard to stay open,” Pimentel said. “It's unfortunate that something that was well-intentioned has been met with such a negative response.”

O'Keefe said that despite the backlash, it was the most profitable day in the company's history.
“At the end of the day, America is all about freedom of expression and that's what this week, this month and ultimately what this country is about and what this flag represents,” Gaines said.
Dani's is expected to open soon.
“There are a lot of gay bars that are not welcoming or open to the community at large,” Pimentel said. “This is a safe space where everyone is welcome. The continued love and support reminds us that we're doing it for the right reasons when it gets tough.”
