Too much email? Gmail's new AI feature can help

If you're looking to get to “inbox zero” or avoid being overwhelmed by email, Google's AI solution might help. At its Google I/O event in May, the search giant announced a series of improvements it plans to bring to Gmail, its free email software. Now, with Google's AI assistant Gemini 1.5 Pro, Gmail can streamline the process of reading and replying to emails.

Gemini is Google's AI-based assistant that's built into Gmail, Docs, Sheets, and more. Gmail users can already use Gemini to write emails based on prompts. For example, you can use it to write cover letters, create birthday invitations, or write more detailed emails. Gemini 1.5 Pro is now available, expanding it to do even more and adding a host of new handy features that you'll want to take advantage of today.

Here are the new features currently available in Gmail for Gemini Advanced's $20/month subscribers, which might be worth the money if you want to organize your inbox without lifting a finger.

1. Summarize this email

In Gemini 1.5 Pro, if you have an email thread that you don't have time to read, you can tap the “Summarize this email” button and a summary card will appear with highlights from the email or email thread.

2. Enter your prompt here

Type a question into the summary card and Gemini will search your emails and attachments for answers. An example given by Google's VP of Workspace, Aparna Pappu, was “Compare quotes for roof repairs by price and availability.” The new Q&A feature makes it quick and easy to get answers to any question in your inbox.

Gemini can also extract information from different email threads and collate them into an organized summary.

3. Suggested Responses

When you're ready to reply to an email, Gemini will give you a few options based on the context of the previous email. For each suggestion, you can long-press the tab to see a longer preview of the reply email.

When will new features be released?

The Gemini 1.5 Pro update is currently available for Gemini Advanced subscribers, who will have to pay $20 per month to access the plan.

Google also announced that the Gemini for Workspace side panel will be broadly available in June.
