From Googol to Google: How a typo created one of the world's biggest tech giants

In arithmetic terms, it represents 10 to the power of 100, or 1 with 100 zeros after it.

When Page checked with an engineer to see if the domain name was available, he misspelled the name and looked up Google instead, which he later realized he preferred.

Notably, the report reveals that before Google was born, the founders were considering naming the company Backrub, as the program used backlinks for searches. Some people believe that Google is an abbreviation for “Global Organization of Earth's Directed Group Languages,” but this is not true. Another tech giant, Apple, was named by co-founder Steve Jobs. Jobs came up with the name while returning from what he called an apple orchard in Oregon, Ladible reports. Allen, being the two creative minds, came up with the name “Micro-Soft”, a clever combination of two words, “microcomputer” and “software”. It was initially written as “Micro-Soft” with a hyphen, but eventually the hyphen was dropped to create the now iconic, clean-cut name “Microsoft”.
