Google antitrust trial to continue

A judge has rejected Google's motion to end a lawsuit by U.S. antitrust regulators focused on digital advertising.

Reuters reported on Friday that during a hearing on Friday (June 14), U.S. District Judge Leonie Brinkema ruled that Google should go to trial.

According to the report, the Justice Department's lawsuit alleges that Google illegally dominates the online advertising technology market.

In a motion to win the case without a trial, Google reportedly argued that antitrust laws don't prevent companies from refusing to do business with rivals and that regulators have not properly defined the ad tech market.

After Friday's ruling, a Google spokesman told Reuters the company “looks forward to setting the record straight.”

The trial is reportedly set to begin on September 9th, with Brinkema set to preside.

Friday's ruling came a week after Google successfully tried to avoid a jury trial and instead have its antitrust charges tried by a judge.

Judge Brinkema issued the ruling on June 7 after the company paid $2.3 million to the federal government in damages that eight federal agencies allegedly suffered as a result of Google's actions.

At that point, the judge said Google's check satisfied the damages claim, no longer needed a jury, and the trial would begin in September.

In filing its lawsuit in September, the Justice Department said Google had illegally seized control of its online advertising division and argued the solution was for a court to order the break-up of the digital search giant.

Google countered at the time that it was facing increasing advertising competition from other major tech companies and that the Justice Department was asking it to walk away from acquisitions that it and other regulators had approved.

In April, the company accused the federal government of fabricating the market in its antitrust lawsuit and asked a judge to dismiss the case, saying the Justice Department still hadn't proven that the company controlled 70% of the online advertising market.

Google said the government was ignoring rivals such as Facebook, Instagram, Amazon and TikTok that compete for online advertising revenue.
