Google releases major security update for Pixel smartphones, fixing 50 vulnerabilities

June 2024 was a big month for Pixel phones: Not only did the Pixel 8a see the introduction of Gemini Nano, but Google also released a major security update for multiple models.

It addresses 50 vulnerabilities ranging from moderate to critical severity. One of the most egregious flaws is CVE-2024-32896, which Tom's Guide describes as an “Elevation of Privilege (EoP) vulnerability.”

EoP refers to a bug or design flaw that allows malicious actors to gain unfettered access to a phone's resources – a level of access that even Pixel owners don't usually have. While not as severe as other vulnerabilities, CVE-2024-32896 received an additional warning from Google on the patch's Pixel update bulletin page, warning that it is “subject to limited, targeted exploitation.”

In other words, it's likely that bad actors will target this flaw to get into Pixel phones, which is why installing the patch is important.

Installing the hotfix

The rest of the patch affects other critical components of the device, such as the fingerprint sensor in the Pixel firmware, and also fixes several Qualcomm and Qualcomm closed-source components.

Google's patch is ready to download for all compatible Pixel phones, and you can find a full list of models on the tech giant's help website, which includes but is not limited to the Pixel Fold, Pixel 7 series, and Pixel 8 series.

It's important to note that the EoP vulnerability also appears to exist in third-party Android hardware, but a fix won't be released for some time. As news site Bleeping Computer explains, the Pixel and Android smartphone operating systems receive security updates at different times. The reason for this separate release is that third-party devices have their own “unique features and capabilities,” so one gets released sooner than the other.

Developers of GrapheneOS, a proprietary security-focused version of Android, first discovered the flaw in April. In a recent post on X (the platform formerly known as Twitter), the team believes that non-Pixel phones likely won't receive the patch until Android 15 is released. Without getting the new operating system, the EoP bug may not be removed. GrapheneOS developers claim that the June update “was not backported.”
