Google Calendar will now let you hide selected holidays

Google Calendar has improved a lot over the last few years, with the latest update making it easier to see if an event was added via Gmail. Despite its many advantages, the way Google Calendar manages holidays is far from perfect. In its current form, users can choose to show certain holidays based on their country or not at all, so they can't individually choose which holidays to show and which to hide. Thankfully, the folks at Google Calendar are already working on fixing this issue.

Evidence discovered by Android Authority within Google Calendar version 2024.23.0-641736842 suggests that the app is working on a new menu that will allow users to hide certain holidays from the calendar view.

As can be seen in the image above, when opening an individual holiday from the calendar view, users will find a new “Hide this holiday” option. We speculate that this is part of a new three-dot menu within the holidays page, but Android Authority's report didn't provide any specifics on this point.

In addition to the “Hide this holiday” option discussed above, Google Calendar is also introducing other changes regarding holidays. On the site, a new option called “Selected Holidays” was discovered under “Holidays” (Settings > Holidays > National/Regional Holidays). The scope of this new addition is unclear, but it is likely intended to give users the option to choose from a wide list of holidays that can be hidden or shown on the calendar.

While the added control over holiday display is certainly a welcome addition, it's unclear when the feature will be widely available. Android Authority reports that the feature isn't enabled for all users, but we found that to be true in Google Calendar version 2024.23.0-641736842. There's probably a server-side element involved, so we'll just have to wait and see if Google makes the switch in the future.
