Logitech's new MX Ink is like a 3D Apple Pencil for Meta Quest artists

Creating 3D art in VR is one of the most useful things you can do with Meta's Quest headset, and Logitech's new stylus, the MX Ink, makes the process even more convenient. The $130 wireless peripheral is the Quest's first official stylus accessory, and it'll be available this fall to coincide with Meta's Connect developer conference in late September.

MX Ink looks like a thick, black pen, but with a button on the side and replaceable tips. The wireless stylus is fully spatially trackable, allowing for full-motion 6DoF (degrees of freedom) work, just like Meta's Quest controller. The stylus also has a unique haptic feature, as well as a pressure-sensing tip for working on 2D surfaces. Logitech says the haptic feature also simulates the sensation of drawing on different types of surface materials. An included “inkwell” base stores the stylus when not in use.

Logitech made a VR stylus back in 2019, but that required a PC headset and a special external tracker to work; MX Ink can be connected to a standalone Quest headset on the go.

The Quest headset already enables drawing and sculpting in VR and AR with the included controllers and hand tracking. The added haptics and pressure sensitivity of the stylus makes it even more convenient for artists. It also doubles as a third paired device while both controllers are functional. You can swap between the controllers and stylus, or use one on each hand. It's also compatible with many of the existing Quest apps, including Adobe Substance Modeler, Gravity Sketch, PaintingVR, Arkio, Engage, OpenBrush, GestureVR, ShapesXR, and Elucis by RealizeMedical.

MX Ink will work with the Quest 2 and Quest 3, as well as “future headsets,” according to Logitech's press release. Meta plans to release a more affordable version of its Quest 3 mixed-reality-enabled VR headset at the same time as the stylus, likely in the fall. At $130, it's essentially the same price as the Apple Pencil Pro, but unlike the Pencil Pro, it functions as a mixed-reality 3D tool. Apple may eventually develop its own product in this space, but for now, Logitech and Meta are leading the way in XR art peripherals.
