Students at the University of Sunderland had the chance to share their work with employers and boost their employability in this year's digital showcase.

The event gives computer science students the opportunity to present their projects to employers they have worked with throughout the year, giving them skills that will be useful in the workplace.

Third-year students also had the opportunity to present their papers to the general public as well as to their supervisors.

Raphael Kokkalis, a final year Web and Mobile Development student, said: “It was great to be able to use the app on my own.

The showcase cultivated skills, including presentation skills, but it was also a celebration.

It's the end of the year. I'm proud to show off the results of all the hard work I've put in. It's a different feeling than just showing it to your boss. It makes you feel like you've accomplished this.

Claudia Kinga Plaza, a network and cybersecurity major, said, “It was very exciting. Of course it was stressful for me, but everything went well. I'm very proud to be able to present my research to my supervisor and other students.”

Raphael added:

It's a proud moment for all the students.

Over the course of a year, students have worked for a variety of employers as part of their studies.

During the showcase, judges selected winning teams that worked with these employers to better integrate technology into their processes and training initiatives.

One of the winning teams, Triple 8, worked with third-party logistics (3PL) service provider Vantec Europe Limited to create an immersive training experience with a focus on health and safety.

Martin Kendall, MD of Vantec, said:

Working with university students has enabled valuable skills showcase and knowledge transfer between education and industry.

Vantec is developing immersive technology for deployment across the UK and Japan and working with the students gave them hands-on experience of how their skillsets can be applied within industry.

The students have created some inspiring and intuitive projects using the latest in educational immersive technologies, we wish them the best of luck in the future and look forward to seeing their work continue.

The students were able to innovate by integrating VR into the process, providing an immersive educational experience for potential trainees.

Paul Graham, interim deputy head of computing, said:

The Digital Showcase event is extremely important for our students as it gives them the opportunity to showcase and demonstrate their work to the many employers we have invited.

In the past, this has enabled students to find internships or further projects in industry, and our event also invited several final year students who are due to graduate in a few weeks to interview.

It is truly gratifying for me and other staff in the department to see the hard work our students put in. They celebrate the end of the term and sometimes even join us in celebrating the end of their academic journey when they graduate and enter the world of work.
