In 105 days, accessing Gmail via third-party apps and devices will become more secure or disappear altogether. This is a stark message to Google Workspace end users and administrators to combat bad actors looking to gain unauthorized access to accounts. Starting September 30, Google's new authentication requirements will not only impact access to Gmail; they will also apply to calendar and contacts accounts.

As detailed in a Google Support post and emails sent earlier this year, after September 30, 2024, Google will no longer support less secure apps, third-party apps, or devices that log in with just a username and password.

It should come as no surprise to anyone who's been paying close attention that Google is cracking down on what it calls less secure apps and tightening authentication for Gmail. In fact, starting April 1, anyone who sends bulk email to a Gmail account will have their emails rejected due to the authentication requirement.

This move towards a more secure future for Google users is currently bringing attention to the LSA issue, i.e. apps and devices that only use the basic authentication method of username and password to sign in to a Google account.

Google confirmed that starting September 30, apps with only this basic level of authentication will encounter errors when trying to access your Google account to get your Gmail, calendar, or contact information. According to Google, these errors usually appear as “invalid username or password” or “can't log in.” Either way, if you don't prepare in advance, you'll be denied access to Gmail.

Google has already removed the LSA setting from the Google Workspace admin console, but users who had access to LSA before June 15 can still use it until September 30. Google warns that users should prevent access to their Google Account from apps or devices that only require a username and password combination. To still access Gmail, Calendar, and Contacts after September 30, users will need to log out and log back in, but this time[Google でログイン]option. This should work fine, but Google says that in some circumstances you might need to remove and re-add your Google account from your device.

As part of the changes, Google Sync will also be phased out. Google says that Google Sync makes your data less secure because it doesn't support OAuth authentication, two-factor authentication, or security keys.
