GSA Announces New Class of Presidential Innovation Fellows Focused on AI

The second group of 2024 Presidential Innovation Fellows has arrived to serve on a “one-year assignment” focused on artificial intelligence, the General Services Administration announced Monday.

According to GSA, the new PIF cohort, made up of 11 experts from technology companies, startups and other organizations, will contribute to eight different agencies in AI-focused roles to advance the Biden Administration's goals of harnessing emerging technologies and ensuring their responsible use. The fellows' work will include projects using data and AI to strengthen electric grid infrastructure and leveraging technology to increase public access to justice while reducing consumer risks.

“We are grateful for the PIF program's role in helping people transition from the tech sector to government, and we look forward to seeing more technologists join public service,” Olivia Chu, deputy director for AI policy in the Office of Science and Technology Policy, said in a GSA press release.

The second batch of PIF Fellows follows the first batch of 21 announced in March and is made up of participants working at 14 institutions focused on modernization efforts.

The DOE fellow will “help advance the VoltAIc initiative, which is building AI-powered tools and streamlining siting and permitting processes to accelerate the deployment of clean energy infrastructure,” Helena Hu, director of the Department of Energy's Office of Critical and Emerging Technologies, said in a statement.

The PIF program was launched by OSTP in 2012 and transferred to GSA in 2013. During that time, the program has hosted more than 260 fellows who have worked at more than 50 agencies. Many of these fellows went on to take innovative, often technology-focused positions at other government agencies.
