YouTube will soon ask viewers to add context to videos

YouTube is testing a way for viewers to add information from their community to videos. The feature, called “Notes,” will allow viewers to add information to clarify whether a video is a parody or contains old footage presented as a current event.

If a note is deemed helpful, it may appear in a small box below the video. YouTube says that currently only a limited number of eligible contributors can post notes, and a third-party rater will evaluate the helpfulness of the note. YouTube will use this feedback to train its note rating system over the coming weeks and months.

As the test progresses, YouTube will eventually ask viewers whether they found a note helpful, somewhat helpful, or not helpful, and why. Those answers will then be fed into an algorithm to determine whether the note was helpful overall. YouTube says its system is more likely to show a note if many people who previously rated it differently now rate it helpful.

Introducing notes to YouTube would introduce the feature to a wider audience, but it could also increase the chances that notes will contain errors or irrelevant information. Other platforms, such as Twitter (now X), began testing community notes in 2021 to provide context to posts.

Like Twitter, YouTube appears to be keeping misinformation at bay by initially limiting the experiment to a limited number of users and raters, which YouTube says is part of how well it learns from experiments.
