Pixel tablets temporarily support Google's new VPN

For a few days, Google's new VPN for Pixel users temporarily worked on Pixel tablets, but support for it was recently dropped.

The Pixel 8 series is the first to introduce a more integrated VPN experience that doesn't require the use of the Google One app, powered by a “VPN by Google One” app that has been temporarily rebranded to “Pixel VPN by Google” on the Play Store.

The listing name has been updated again, now simply called “VPN by Google,” which matches the name on the device after last week's update that was rolled out to the Pixel 7 series and Fold without requiring Android 14 QPR3.

When the latest version was released last Thursday, Google initially let Pixel tablet owners download and set up the VPN. Officially, VPN by Google is only available for the Pixel 7, 7 Pro, 7a, Fold, 8, 8 Pro, and 8a.

Over the last 24 hours or so, Pixel tablets are no longer listed as compatible tablets and can no longer connect to the VPN even when it's installed (see cover image).

This isn't surprising, but it's disappointing that Google VPN doesn't apply to Pixel tablet owners, as they're based in the same hardware generation as the Pixel 7 and are similarly priced compared to the A-series.
