Anthropic releases new AI model that is said to surpass OpenAI's best work

Anthropic, a San Francisco-based AI startup founded in 2021 by researchers who left OpenAI, has released a new version of the Claude model that it claims surpasses the capabilities of OpenAI's latest AI system, GPT-4o.

Anthropics' release of the new AI model, which it calls Claude 3.5 Sonnet, comes just a month after OpenAI released GPT-4o, illustrating the intensity and speed with which top AI companies are racing to match and surpass the capabilities and performance of each other's software.

It remains to be seen whether Antropix's claim that Claude 3.5 beat GPT4-o in industry benchmark tests will be accepted by OpenAI and the broader community of AI researchers and developers at companies that deploy so-called AI foundational models. But it highlights how tough it is for AI companies to create product differentiation that lasts for more than a few weeks.

As it turns out, OpenAI may not wait long to release its next model: The company recently confirmed that one is currently in training. Three weeks ago, Paris-based Mistral, an emerging competitor in the modeling space, released its first generative AI model for coding. And Anthropic itself only just released its previous model family, Claude 3, in March.

The pace of progress is incredibly fast, Anthropic co-founder and president Daniella Amodei acknowledged in an interview with Fortune ahead of today's announcement. But she disagreed with the idea that the speed of model development means a lack of differentiation. There is certainly a bit more differentiation in terms of product features, availability and specialization. She said the latest Claude models build on existing personalities, as well as the safety, security and reliability features the company is building into its product features and model training. She said this focus will remain the same no matter what models Anthropic brings to market.

The Claude 3.5 Sonnet is the first in Anthropic's upcoming family of Claude 3.5 branded models.

Amodei didn't offer any details about the size or technical training of the Claude 3.5 Sonnet model, leaving users and the public with no idea why the model, according to Antropic, has shown notable improvements in understanding nuance, humor, and complex instructions, or why it runs twice as fast as the company's latest, most intelligent model, Claude 3 Opus, released in March. It's also unclear how the company will be able to offer the new model for free to users on Antropic's iOS app and Claude.ai.

She said such things are highly proprietary and are like magical research secrets in determining how to train models to reach that level of ability.

Amodei said that while Claude 3.5 Sonnet is multimodal for image inputs like charts and graphs, which make up a lot of data within an enterprise, Anthropic hasn't prioritized voice assistants like the ones OpenAI debuted with GPT-4o on March 13. “We just haven't had any requests for it from most of our enterprise customers,” she said. To be clear, there are definitely use cases where businesses could benefit, and it's something to consider in the future.

In a sign that Anthropic is working hard to further differentiate itself among its larger enterprise target audience, part of today's announcement was about a new feature called “Artifacts” that lets teams work together in a dedicated workspace on Claude.ai. Users can ask Claude to generate content like code snippets, text, or designs, which then appear in a window next to the conversation for others to edit and build on. The feature marks Claude's evolution from conversational AI to a collaborative environment, according to the press release.

Still, Amodei doesn't expect the fierce race for AI model dominance to slow down anytime soon. “It's hard to know the exact pace of progress, but I'd be a bit surprised if we don't see this rapid evolution across all of these companies,” she said.
