Google One VPN is shutting down

As announced back in April, users are now unable to access the VPN on Google One.

The VPN was announced in October 2020 for users on its $9.99/month plan. In March 2023, it became available on all plans, including the $1.99/month plan. It's available through the Google One app on Android and iOS, and Google has also released dedicated Mac and Windows clients.

Google One's VPN was pitched as offering “an extra layer of online protection” rather than allowing users to access services in other countries without a location switcher. The company published a white paper, had a third-party audit of its system, and open-sourced its client API.

Google said it was discontinuing the VPN because “people simply weren't using it” and that the move would “free up space to support more high-demand features,” potentially referring to Fitbit Premium and Nest Aware, which are currently only available to UK subscribers.

Meanwhile, Pixel 7, 7 Pro, 7a, Fold, 8, 8 Pro, and 8a owners will still get Pixel VPN by Google when they buy the phone. Access to this VPN is rolling out through the Play Store and Android 14 QPR3, but it's missing two existing features.

The option to use larger IP address ranges, such as country level IP addresses and city or state level, is not available with VPN by Google. Blocking the internet if the VPN disconnects is also not available with VPN by Google.

Google Fi Wireless also offers a VPN to its subscribers.

As of 12PM PST on June 21, Google One's VPN was no longer able to connect. Existing connections may continue to work until the next internet outage.

When you open the Google One mobile app, you'll see the message “Google One VPN is no longer available” and the VPN tile is no longer visible since the latest Android update (version 1.223.x). The desktop client displays the message “VPN is not available for this device or account.”

Google is recommending users remove the app on Mac and Windows.
