Responsible AI finally reaches C-suite level

Responsible AI finally reaches C-suite level

A dedicated role for responsible AI

Should organizations consider creating a dedicated position for an executive responsible for responsible AI? That would be a sensible move, but shouldn't this be part of the chief information officer or newly appointed chief AI officer's role anyway?

Either way, the need for responsible AI is urgent. False recommendations, illusions and privacy violations are rampant. According to Arnab Chakraborty, Accenture's recently appointed Chief Responsible AI Officer, the most pressing concern is algorithmic bias that is rampant in AI models around the world.

As technology gets smarter, he says, the threats will pose bigger challenges. Considering that AI learns from the datasets it's trained on, there's a good chance that these datasets contain unintended biases related to demographics, such as racial bias, gender or even income bias.

We asked Chakraborty why a dedicated role like a Chief AI Officer is needed today and how he is helping pave the way for similar roles across organizations committed to responsible and ethical AI adoption.

The role played by a Chief Responsible AI Officer is different from that of a Chief AI Officer. Responsible AI is a C-suite level issue and stakeholders need to understand its importance and how to use it, he said. A Chief AI Officer will manage AI strategy, research and development, and the use of AI for the company and its clients. A Chief Responsible AI Officer will ensure that AI deployment is fair, robust, and explainable, that AI improves efficiency, serves people right, and delivers value in a transparent and responsible manner.

At the same time, the chief AI officer will be in a position to raise awareness and educate executive-level colleagues about the urgency of responsible AI. While a C-level leader may currently be filling the AI chief role, we want to see a future where all leaders embody the essence of a responsible AI chief more broadly, Chakraborty says. A committed executive can create a layer of objectivity, oversight, and focus to operationalize responsible AI.

Implementing AI ethically means moving beyond metrics such as financial performance to a holistic view that considers the causes and impacts of AI on society and people, he stresses. The first question leaders should ask themselves is whether their organization has established standards and principles for AI, and whether they are connected to employees, organizational goals and values.

A key part of this task is defining responsible AI, which Chakraborty explains as taking intentional actions to design, deploy and use AI to create value and build trust by protecting against potential risks in AI.

Importantly, he added, AI implementations should be human-centered by design. Responsible AI should be fair and free of unwanted bias and unintended negative effects. AI should be safe and enabled by compliance, data privacy, and cybersecurity, but it's not just a compliance issue. AI should be a full C-suite-level strategy.

He added that the duty of the Chief AI Officer is to understand why AI behaves the way it does and the ever-evolving capabilities of the technology. It is important to monitor and audit AI, especially when it comes to ethical judgments, because as things stand, ethical judgments in our society are made based on a structure of values and principles. AI automates these judgments that lack ethical and moral sensitivity. Combating such unintended risks requires a strong and responsible AI framework, which has become a key priority for the entire board.

Of course, legal departments will inevitably be involved in discussions around AI, if they aren't already. As global regulations come into effect, in-house legal departments will be critical in shepherding AI adoption and providing effective legal advice to drive efficiencies, limit AI use, and protect their organizations.
