Huawei Technologies showed off the latest in its operating system and AI technologies at a developer conference in Dongguan, China. HarmonyOS, introduced in 2019 in response to U.S. restrictions on Google's Android, has been deployed on more than 900 million devices. Huawei's smartphone sales grew 68% in the first five months of the year, bolstered by Harmony-powered models such as the Mate 60.

Speaking at the opening ceremony of a three-day developers conference in the southern Chinese city of Dongguan, Richard Yu, chairman of Huawei's consumer business group, said the company's Harmony OS is now available on more than 900 million devices.

“Harmony has made great progress. In terms of building the core technology of an independent operating system, I would say we have achieved in 10 years what it took our Western peers more than 30 years to accomplish,” Yu said.

HarmonyOS is Huawei's own operating system that was launched in 2019 after Google ended support for the Android OS used on its smartphones due to US technology restrictions.
