Google AI will make you spend less time on Reddit and more time on LinkedIn: Study

It's been over a month since Google introduced AI-powered answers to the top of its search results and received backlash over the feature's inaccurate answers.

New research from SEO platform SE Ranking has found that Google has reduced the frequency of its AI-powered summaries and changed the websites it uses as sources for answers.

Wednesday's study looked at 100,000 keywords across 20 fields, including business, politics and health, and ran Google searches for those keywords. The researchers found that AI's presence in Google search results had dropped significantly compared to the same searches five months earlier.

The researchers found that over 90% of 100,000 searches had no AI-driven results, up from over 63% in January.

The proportion of AI summaries automatically generated by Google fell by more than 52%.

The SE Ranking researchers wrote that this “sharp drop” is likely due to Google trying to make its AI overviews more accurate and reliable.

“Search engines are becoming more selective when generating AI content,” they added.

Reddit and Nerdwallet were on the top 10 list in January, but are no longer on the list, as are Quora, Investopedia, and Local.google.com (or Google Maps, which lists local businesses).

In their place are five new brands: Runner's World, Healthline, Run Repeat, Very Well Mind and Men's Health.

Runner's World and Healthline are in the sports, exercise, self-care, wellness and healthcare niches, which “may indicate that Google prioritizes sites with deep expertise on specific topics,” SE Ranking researchers wrote.

Sites like Reddit and Quora have benefited from the August Google update that prioritized discussions and forums: in the eight months following the update, through April, Reddit's traffic nearly tripled.

Google is the global search engine leader, commanding over 90% of the world market.
