Target rolls out GenAI chatbots in US stores, technology plays a big role in the future of retail — Retail Tech Innovation Hub

The Store Companion chatbot will be available as an app on in-store team members’ specially equipped handheld devices to instantly answer questions about processes and procedures.

They will also serve as store process experts and coaches, helping new and seasonal Team Members learn on the job.

“Generative AI is a game-changing technology that will enable Store Companion to make everyday tasks easier and empower our teams to respond to customer requests with confidence and efficiency,” said Mark Shindell, Target's executive vice president and chief store officer.

“This tool gives our teams the time and attention to serve our guests with care and create a shopping destination that invites discovery, ease and everyday moments of joy.”

Target is currently testing the tool in about 400 stores and is using feedback from the teams to refine the experience ahead of a chain-wide rollout.

“We've received great feedback from our team about the new app,” said Jake Seaquist, manager of the test store in Champlin, Minnesota.

“Being more efficient in everyday operations means more time for our team members to spend with our customers and improve their experience across our stores.”

Since the pilot began, team members have shared their expertise and added materials to help shape the tool.
