Google launches Gemini and Chrome text-to-speech features for students

At the ISTE 2024 education conference, Google announced Chrome's latest features, including Read Aloud in reading mode and Gemini features for schools.

Gemini gemini.google.com will be “available to teens in over 100 countries around the world” using Workspace for Education (school) accounts. It's already available for personal users, and Google is implementing “additional data protections for all education users, free of charge,” which will be rolled out over the coming months.

Google Classroom is testing Gemini to help educators plan lessons and content, and is also introducing Read Along to help younger students practice reading comprehension with real-time, AI-powered help.

The upcoming feature will allow teachers to “create personalized stories tailored to the needs of their students.” Read Along in Google Classroom is available globally in English, with other languages ​​(starting with Spanish) coming soon.

A version of Google Vids without the generative AI will be available to students and teachers who use Google Workspace for Education Plus.

Meanwhile, Google will also make Meet and Assignments available on its third-party learning management systems (LMS): Canvas and PowerSchool Schoology Learning.

Chrome on desktop now has a read-to-speech feature in the side panel of reading mode, after the Android app gained a similar TTS feature. Playback speed can be adjusted from 0.5x to 4x, and there's also the ability to turn off line-by-line highlighting. You can play/pause using the next/previous sentence controls.

On ChromeOS, the Files app “now includes enhanced image labels so that screen readers can read unlabeled images in the Chrome browser.” Google Classroom assignments will appear in the shelf calendar, as will the Google Tasks integration, which is expected to roll out in the coming weeks.
